  To avoid engine and cylinder contamination, Head Exchange always keep our workshop clean and tidy.

  Stripping the head

  Before the cylinder head can be checked correctly, it has to be stripped & thoroughly clean.

  Sonic and wash cleaning the head

  Head Exchange have purchased the latest cleaning technology, where the heads and motors are Ultrasonic Cleaned. This uses sound waves to clean and bring them back like new. The products used in this process are Environmentally Friendly and are completely BIO Degradable.

  Sand blasting the head

  Any stubborn bits of carbon are wet blasted. This again is re-circulated, so there is no waste and zero emission to our environment.

  Checking the head

  Now the product is clean we can check for defects and hardness of the metal. All heads are Hardness tested and rejected if hardness is below 75 Brinell.

  Facing valves

  To confirm that there are no bent valves, our technician will grind the valve face. If valves are bent the face will not clean up, any valves bent or worn will be replaced.

  Crack testing the head

  Our technician now have to check heads are not cracked or any unseen pin holes. This is either done with Ultra Sonic Light, for Cast Iron or pressure test plate, for alloy, sometimes both methods are used, especially in Diesel.

  Straightening the head

  Sometimes heads can be bent if not within our strict tolerances, we will re-straighten using a special flame press.

  

  

• 

  Welding the head

  Our water is bad for Alloy heads just because it has some corrosion, it can easily be repaired. Our welding technician has over 40 years experience with welding heads.

• 

  

  

  

  Checking the camshaft

  When a timing belt or timing chain breaks, it is essential to check that the camshaft is not bent and make sure it runs dead true in the tunnels.

  

  

  

• 

  Facing the head

  The head has now passed all the checking and is ready for machining. The Cylinder heads are now hard and straight, this means we only have to remove minimal material off the face of head and it can again be machined later in life.

• 

  Fitting valve seats

  The valve seats now need to be True and Accurate, this is done on a Serdi Millennium Machine, which is very Precise and the heads have to pass 100% Vacuum test before allowed to move onto the next section.

• 

  Fitting valve guides

  Valve guides take a lot of punishment and wear. Our technician will make sure all valve guides have minimum clearance and are replaced if worn.

• 

  Head assembly

  Getting close to finishing the recondition process, the heads are now being assemble by our technician, with new Valve stem seals fitted and set all tappets clearances

• 

  Final checking and approval

  The cylinder head is now ready for finial quality check, e.g. thickness check, Vacuum test, valves and waterways, and signed off by our technician it is now ready for packing and dispatch.

  Delivery

  Head Exchange have our own delivery van and ute, will deliver North to Clarkson, south to Mandurah, East to Mundaring, which means customers will get there order in no time. Country areas and inter states customers will be looked after by our trusted freight with daily pickup at 4pm.
